Yahoo China have a face-lift today!!

Yahoo China, which is owned by Alibaba group, dressed up like a classical China portal with more focus on content aggregation. The home page is now packed with text, It took TG a surprise when TG accessed the site with a colleague sitting adjacent. We both thought that we went to the wrong site!

Yahoo China’s new look is taking Sina.com approach and they start looking similar. As far as TG remember, Yahoo China has done the same thing before and have shifted back to Yahoo International website a year ago.

The abrupt change — so far TG has heard no announcement, may leave us to believe that the international website looks and feels is not doing very well in China, causing the company to revert back to its China approach.

Taobao.com (81.5%),  Dangdang.com (16.6%) , Joyo.com (13.6%) are by far the largest market shareholders in China C2C marketplace. The findings was revealed by China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) recent survey, which covered 19 key cities in China for the first six months of 2008.

CNNIC conceived that Taobao.com was still taking the lead in the market and would not be replaced by its competitors in a short time.

On the whole, the user penetration rate of Taobao.com was higher than that of the website ranking the second by nearly 65%. Taobao.com has formed certain scale effect and it is very difficulty for its first place ranking to be surpassed by another website in a short time.

At the five-year anniverary ceremony,  Alibaba (1688) group’s Chairman and Non-Executive Director  Jack Ma stated that the China internet company had planned to invest RMB 2 billion in the next five year.

The huge amount is the third and largest investment from Alibaba (1688) since the establishment of Taobao.com, far exceeding the 1.45 billion yuan it received from its parent starting from 2003.

Taobao.com is currently the nation’s dominant online retailer with 67 million registered accounts. About 10 million customers visit Taobao daily.

In the meantime, Joyo.com is picking up its speed and has reached the top ranking in B2C marketplace. Joyo.com  was owned by Amazon.com

The challenge remains to be seen since the C2C marketplace is till towered over by Taoboa.com (81.5%) for the first half of 2008, according to China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) latest release of online shopping statistics.

Dangdang.com comes into the second place with 16.6% market share, Amazon China subsidiary Joyo, 14.6%, Tom Online and eBay’s Eachnet, 8.4%, Tencent’s Paipai.com 7.2%.

Taoboa.com currently has an IM tool - Ali Wan Wan to share with Alibaba group.

Baidu, which now dominates the Chinese search landscape with a 60 percent market share, served 3.3 billion searches in the global arena. It’s estimated that there are over 510 million users in Asia. But more to the point here, China has become the fastest growing internet country with the largest internet users base.

Baidu IM tool — Baidu Hi has recorded 200,000 downloads ever sincee it released its IM tool. In the meantime, Alibaba group should not under estimate Hong Kong-listed Tencent (007.HK), which is posied to be one of the few major competitor due to its exponent growth in China consumer market.

Locally-listed B2B platform Alibaba.com formed a strategic alliance with Infomedia India Limited several days ago. The inititative has undoubtedly got their India competitors into nerves. They reacted by enlisting companies into their list pages aggresssively.

TradeIndia.com and Indiamart.com have embraced on India B2B marketplace for some years.

Randomly, they’ve added ContentNext (contentSutra’s parent company) in two categories: “Studios, Film Production & Multimedia Production Services” and “Advertising Agencies, Consultants & Designers”. Other mails and reminders were received 2nd Nov, Jan 16th and more recently on April 15th… says contentSutra.com.

As an internet user, TG prefers to see competition in positive manner, which will benefit the industry and provide more options for us. Yet, competition should be conducted in compliance with internet best practices — No spam. Having said that, users are the ultimate decision makers who opt for yes or no!
