Outspoken Albert Jinghan Cheng (鄭經翰) and his business partners are set to develop a Cantonese- language radio platform following the approval of a new AM channel from the Hong Kong SAR government yesterday.

Mr Cheng, also nicknamed “Taipan”, gives his strong and bold message of  ” Sound becomes Power” in a flash intro movie embedded in his personal website. Ostensibly, he has already blown his horn to operate a 24-hour radio station in the next 12 years, using the AM 810 frequency.

Like Video media, radio channel is potentially a great attraction to online advertisers. You may have the same feeling if you check out some of the site usage figures from BBC radio station online. With such a big pool of average weekly unique users, on demand listening hours and live listening hours, Wave Media will be ready for pitching sales to online advertisers.

Before Mr Cheng’s departure from his former employer, Commercial Radio, he gained his popularity by addressing issues concerning social injustice and government incompetence in his radio programme.

He was also informally named “Chief Executive before Ten” (十點前特首) as he hosted ”Teacup in the Storm” from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., 5 days a week.

Major shareholders of Wave Media include Wong Cho-bau, a delegate to the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and legislator David Li Kwok-po, chairman of the Bank of East Asia (SEHK: 0023).

It will be the first time since 1991 that a new broadcaster has been licensed to operate in Hong Kong.
