After learning that Google website translator gadget is launched , TG is very excited to try it on immediately with a high hope that it can remove language barrier for my users. Dismayed by the experiment results, TG decided not to use the website  traslator gadget now.

Why’s that?  I showed the Google website translator gadget and the translation pages to my friends,  we come up with a few points after the experiments:

  • The tool does not provide an accurate translation from English to Simplified Chinese. Sentence structures of the Simiplified Chinese version are very wired. Many of them fail to deliver meaningful results.
  • The yellow highlight in the illustration below indicates that the translation is ambiguous.

  • Keywords are not displayed correctly
  • Google website translator gadget seems to perform better with short sentences, short phases and titles. When it starts working with long sentences or paragraph, it’s messy!
  • Changing from one language to another language such as, Simplified Chinese to Traditional Chinese is not very smooth. The translation in progress indicator keeps moving clockwise without finishing the job

Sorry, I don’t think I would use it now. After I did the test, I get rid of  the embedded code. Previously, Google and 金山词霸 has released a desktop dictionary which appears to be more useful and successful.

TG will wait until Google tunes up the translator gadget in the next round.
